Do you have a project hanging out there that you really need to just focus on? I do, and it is really starting to nag at me. It seems like there are not enough hours in the day. By the time I give to my daughter and husband, my clients and my business, my friends and family, even the dog….working on decorating my home tends to fall down on the priority list. What do they say about the shoemaker’s kids having no shoes? I get it.
Anyways, here is my black cloud hanging over my head. I am doing a custom rug in our living room. And, here is the state it is in at the moment.
The starting point for this rug came from an ad my husband spotted in the June 2009 Veranda. He thought it might look nice in our living room. And, by taking the initiative to help in the process, I know he was hoping to keep me more on the traditional side, which is fine.
The other day as I was writing the final check for my dining room “Stump Rug” he casually inquired as to when our living room rug would be in. I felt a bit guilty telling him I still had not sent back revisions on the art board that was in my possession. I need to review the board, make modifications, determine if I like the colors, pattern, etc. I can do this…I just need some quiet time to accomplish it. And, my goal is to get that done in the next week. I am hoping by posting it here it will keep me accountable!
So, do you have any projects, big or small, hanging over your head? I’d love to hear about them. Misery loves company!

Do I? My wife and I have been renovating a 130 year old house for over 3 years now! It’s finally livable, but I have a HUGE punchlist of things to finish up in the next couple months so that we can get furniture and decorate… <>
February 18th, 2010 at 10:09 amIt seems that a house is always a work in progress, doesn’t it? For me, the big sticking point I have is a window treatment for a small room in the house. The room is tiny, a small offshoot of the living room, just 9.5 by 13. The fabric is purchased, as is the trim, but I cannot seem to commit. Not to mention that the walls were painted a complimentary color four years ago! For such a small room, there are two doors, one very wide, and six windows. I cannot seem to wrap my head around it at all!
February 18th, 2010 at 10:19 amYou sound so organized to only have one task undone. And I think that a rug is a big investment and it’s important that you take some time to go through the design process slowly enough that you are really pleased with it. It’s kind of like living with bands of different paint colors on the wall before you make a final decision.
I have slips to make for 3 small swivel chairs, two large wingbacks, an interesting “chair for 2″, a “chair and a half”, and 2 ottomans. Plus I want to make a cushion for the windowseat. Add that to 3 skirts to cover the small appliance storage in the kitchen, a skirt for the laundry room counter and one for the half bath counter, and some sort of window covering for 24 windows. And, I’d love to try making a bedskirt out of tightly gathered lightweight linen for the guest room. That will probably call for matching shams. And we plan to turn a bedroom into a master bath, after we unpack about 100 moving boxes and bags.
February 18th, 2010 at 10:21 amBill, You and your wife will have such a sense of satisfaction once you are “done” with the heavy lifting. I love old houses and wish my husband and I were more handy!
Stephanie–I completely agree, there is always something to do. Is your area a sunroom?
Lee–Oh no, I have plenty of procrastination going on. Things waiting for budget to free up, etc. I just shared one, trust me!
February 18th, 2010 at 12:58 pmI am confused. My first day after chemo, duh? Did he see the rug in a home in Veranda or in an advertisement in Veranda? I can’t imagine what a rug like that must cost. I thought I was making a major purchase when I paid $300. for a Ballard Design Poeme Rug!

Susie – We call it a sunroom, but only because it has no formal purpose, but gets beautiful light at all times of the day. It isn’t what most would consider a sunroom, or a Florida room. It is a semi-formal room, with traditional dark wood furniture, and my favorite place to settle in with a good book.
February 19th, 2010 at 8:39 pmIt looks like you’re on the right track to having a gorgeous rug. Will look forward to seeing the finished product!
