I have no aversion to taking to the formal dining room for casual entertaining. In fact, as our dinner guests departed Saturday night, I noticed that Maddie and her friend had been in there having a “picnic.” The table was full of pretend food, two sets of fairy wings, a couple of “magic wands” and other random items from the toy cabinets.
However, as a family with young kids, we often (usually) entertain the whole family. And let’s face it, it is nice to see what the toddlers are up to while the parents eat. As a result, I find that we eat in the kitchen more and more when we have friends over. So, when we update our kitchen I want to make sure that our dining table is large enough to seat a crowd and looks nice enough to feel like we aren’t hanging out in the kitchen….saving the dining room for something more special.
These images of kitchen seating, each designed by Windsor Smith, have wowed me.
I absoutely love the idea of using slipcovered wing chairs at the heads of the table. I am not sure I’d have thought of this on my own. I am thinking monogrammed slips are in our future. I also really love the combination of those with the chinese chippendale chairs. I would probably not do arm chairs in my own kitchen….to save on space.
Our kitchen has wood floors, something I longed for in our previous home where we had tile. But, I have to say these floors also have me wondering / dreaming.
What do you think, do you like the look?

Have had both wood (in Virginia) and tile in Scottsdale, where tile is king. But, I prefer the look of wood.
February 7th, 2011 at 9:30 amThese two kitchens are my ABSOLUTE FAVORITES in the whole wide world. I’m also hoping to flank the ends of my dining room table w/ two slip covered chairs just like this. I love these kinds of tables smack dab in the middle of a kitchen – seems so European to me.
We did venture out in the cold, which was probably not the best idea but Stella loved it. Thankfully, she didn’t ask to go back out again, though. Waking her up this morning for school, however, was like waking a bear. And getting her dressed? Even worse. When she walked into class this morning w/ eyes still red from crying, her teacher just laughed and said many kids had a hard time getting back on track today. I pray we don’t have a repeat this week! xo

February 8th, 2011 at 5:16 pmI love this. I’m waiting to find the perfect wing chairs to slip for our dining room, where we do all our eating, both casual and fancy! Our eat-in area is currently being used as a playroom for the 2 year old and it is perfect. In my future dream kitchen re-do scenario, I will have a very long island/table smack in the middle of the kitchen.
February 8th, 2011 at 7:27 pmFinding the perfect wing chairs for a price I wanted to pay has taken forever (4 years), so I have slipped parsons for now. But love the look of the right wingback (like the extra height).
We always eat in the kitchen when we have a family over. Always the dining room when it’s adult only.
