Clarence House Outdoor Fabrics....

The temperatures are supposed to get up to near 90 degrees this weekend.  So, I see lots of outside time in our future….lots of projects to be done around the yard….and I am sure a run or two to the park or the local “farm” will be in order for our little one.

This image using Clarence House outdoor fabrics puts me in the mood for a weekend outdoors.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Guest Room Inspiration....

Currently, my parents and my younger sister live within a 5 mile radius of our home.  The guest rooms are only used by them when they stay over the night before a holiday or after a late night where no one needs to be out on the road.  But, when we move later this year the guest rooms will get a lot more use.

I think this room would be perfect for my sister when she visits (hopefully, often).  I love the putty color on the doors and the judicious use of pink.  The art above the bed is framed to perfection.  Girly, but not too much.

A breather.....

This has been a busy week on work and family fronts.  Lots going on here including a trip to the emergency room for my almost two year old….she’s fine, thanks.  (The vitamin she shoved up her nose, not so much!)  We also just learned we are moving to Dallas later this year so it has been hectic trying to negotiate timing of a move and wrap my head around what needs to be done.  Where to start?!?  (And by the way, if you have recommendations on where to live inside the city or good school, feel free to send them my way!)

So, I apologize for the rather slow blogging this week.   Hope to have a fresh post up soon.

In the meantime, check out my sidebar for a few new specials running now through May.

Osborne and Little "Boheme Tamara" Wallpaper

This weekend, I was flipping through the May issue of Traditional Home Magazine.  I came across an article on Miette, a pastry shop in San Francisco.  While the cakes, pastries and confections look amazing, I was immediately drawn the the wallpaper adorning the shop’s walls.

I love the paper, which is named after Tamara de Lempicka, the artist whose portraits symbolise the “wild ride of the jazz age.”  It is available in four different colorways.

I love the colorway used at Miette.  And, I love the soft green on the woodwork.

This paper is definitely being filed away in my inspiration files.  I am a sucker for pink and green for little girls….and love the idea of this paper used either above a chair rail or on the ceiling.

Personal touches to make your house a home....

What makes a house a home (in my opinion) are the personal items and elements that have meaning to the family that resides within. We all want our homes to look beautiful, but it really is in the eye of the beholder. My husband and I like to entertain, but it is mainly friends and family. We entertain his clients in restaurants or social events and we are not much for keeping up with the Jones or show.  We want something that makes us feel at home instantly upon walking in the door.

My husband and I have pretty different design ideas….he likes heavy chunky furniture and dark earthy colors. I am more traditional but with a contemporary flair.  So, our home is one of compromises.  And, as the years pass…I’ll admit we have each rubbed off on each other more than either of us probably expected.

This room doesn’t really reflect either one of our styles (or should I say our lifestyle…a bit too formal and white), but I love it nonetheless. The tables, I absolutely love. I love the accessories and even love the light palette.  I just know it isn’t practical with an almost 2 year old and another on the way.

But, what really draws me to this room is the art. The row of drawings all lined up, taking the spotlight. I imagine the owner of this home is a dog lover. Perhaps these are renderings of beloved pets they have had over the years?

I love how they are done with a simple, yet elegant, mat and frame. They really make the room, in my opinion.  So, this image has been in my inspiration files for some time now, ever since I saw it in an ad for Brad Weesner’s design firm.  And, I know I want to do something similar to make our home a little more personal.

I’ve mentioned before that my husband, Chris, is Australian. He grew up there, graduated from the Air Force Academy and fell in love with the US while doing an exchange at the USAF academy in Colorado many years ago.

He always knew one day he would see his dream of living here become a reality.  But, despite how much he loves it here, I know a piece of him misses “home.” As a teenage boy, he used to love to hike in the Glasshouse Mountains in Australia.  Here is an image from a recent trip we took….

If I remember correctly, these “mountains” are actually ancient volcanic plugs. Each has it’s own name.

I just cannot figure out the best medium (watercolors, drawings, oil)? Going back about a year ago, I was working with someone on Etsy to do some watercolors….and it just didn’t work out. So, now I am a bit apprehensive as to where to start on this project. I know I’ve got some artistic readers. So, what do you think?  How do I best get the “look” of the dogs above, while doing justice to these Australian beauties?

And, what about you? What special touches have you added to your house to make it uniquely home?

It's all in the details.....

It is often the little details that take something from good to great.  Today, I was perusing the website of Liz Williams Interiors and noticed this image from a 2003 Better Homes & Gardens publication titled “Window and Wall Ideas.”

I immediately recognized this fabric (Scalamandré Aviary in Taupe), a sample of which I have in my files from a trip to the Design Center.  The fabric ended up not working for the intended project and I sortof forgot about it.  But, this image gave me some renewed interest.  I love the band of brown fabric on the edge of these panels, and even think the small bow details could be sweet for a bedroom.

I did a similar band down my family room drapes in our old house.  Unfortunately, the images are on a currently defunct computer that I must get to my IT person to rescue with a whole host of other missing data!

As I’ve mentioned before, we are on a decorating freeze as a cross country move may be in our future.  But, this doesn’t stop me from planning in case we don’t end up moving.  I am thinking a neutral grasscloth wallpaper for my master bedroom with the subtle blue from this fabric pulled up on to the ceilings.  I’ve got three windows in the master bedroom and a triple window in our sitting room…..I am thinking this fabric would work well for simple pinch pleated panels, with interest added by way of a band of solid fabric.

Do you have a project where the little details made the project?  I’d love to see photos or hear about it.
